New stormwater infrastructure in Khayelitsha to reduce risk of flooding

The City of Cape Town advises residents, road users and businesses in Khayelitsha of the construction of stormwater infrastructure along Japhta K Masemola Road, between Baden Powell Drive and Nyanda Avenue, which commences tomorrow, 4 September 2024. The work is scheduled to take place between 08:00 and 16:30, Monday to Friday until Tuesday, 17 September 2024, provided there are no unforeseen delays. 

The outlet of the existing stormwater drainage system is currently blocked as a result of the establishment of the Island Informal Settlement which is causing road flooding at the low point of Japhta K Masemola Road when it rains.

The installation of the new stormwater infrastructure will alleviate the risk of flooding along Japhta K Masemola Road, thereby extending the longevity of the city's road network and improving the safety of all road users.

'We ask that residents in the area please cooperate with the City's Road Infrastructure Management team as they install this new stormwater infrastructure. This way the work can be done as efficiently and speedily as possible. Now that the weather conditions are more favourable our teams are able to implement this project which will alleviate the risk of flooding in the area to a great extent. Ultimately, the project will assist in ensuring safer road driving conditions and reducing the risk of the roads deteriorating as a result of continuous flooding and standing water,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The City of Cape Town recommends that road users consider alternative routes where possible, and to be cautious while work is under way, to lower their speed and pay attention to road signs.
